The concept of ‘therapy’ can provide a strong sense of anxiety and overwhelm due to the unfamiliar environment, new person and generally just a new experience. I aim to provide a welcoming space for children and young people to explore, using a range of personal interests and creative therapeutic activities to reduce this sense of overwhelm and to support the relationship being built between myself and the client.
I work closely with children and young people experiencing low self-esteem, struggling to accept or understand personal experiences e.g. a new diagnosis, life transitions, relationships, and generally provide support to help the individual discover effective regulation techniques that work specifically for them. I have an undergraduate degree specifically in SEND so can support neurodivergent clients. All sessions I provide are adapted specifically to each client, taking into account their needs, interests and personal goals.
The sessions are creative psychotherapy sessions which are evidence-based, following a client-led approach. They could include therapeutic play, crafts, art, movement, journaling, story-telling and the expressive methods used are tailored to the individuals needs and preferences.
By working closely with a wide range of ages and needs, I discovered the benefits of creativity and the direct link it has to supporting our wellbeing. I recognised the ways in which it can be adapted to support individuals that may face barriers to other methods of support e.g. communication and avoidance, which is why I chose to train as a creative psychotherapist. Being trained in movement analysis allows for me to deepen my understanding of an individual and their needs even if there is limited verbal input, allowing me to support the client further even when finding the verbal communication challenging. Therefore, the use of creative activities provides a less overwhelming approach to supporting the individual, but also provides the opportunity for me to help support the individual therapeutically.
The main aims of my sessions are to support what a client feels is important to them, allowing them to feel seen, accepted and providing a safe space to be open and themselves. This is with the aim for them to feel empowere
