Advice on GCSE Results Day & Support for Parents/Carers
GCSE Results Day is Thursday 20 August, and whatever your results, remember, one set of grades does not define who you are or what you can achieve.
Results Day can bring lots of different emotions. You might feel excited, nervous, proud, disappointed, relieved, or a mixture of everything.
Whatever you’re feeling, remember it’s okay.
Be Proud of Yourself
If you achieve the results you were hoping for, congratulations!
Take a moment to recognise the hard work, determination and effort that got you here. Whether you’re moving on to sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, training or employment, this is the beginning of your next chapter.
And if you aren’t completely sure what you want to do next, that’s okay too. You don’t have to have your whole future planned at the age of 16.
If Things Didn’t Go to Plan
If your results aren’t what you hoped for, please don’t think that this means you’ve failed.
There may be different options available, including speaking with your school or college, looking at alternative courses, resits, apprenticeships, training or other pathways.
Your GCSE results are not a measurement of your worth, your potential or the person you can become.
Sometimes the route we planned doesn’t work out exactly as expected, but there can still be plenty of ways forward.
Take a breath, talk to someone you trust and give yourself time to consider your options.
Support Is Available
If you’re feeling worried, overwhelmed or unsure about what happens next, you don’t have to deal with it alone, Positive-Talk Counselling and Support Services provide support in many ways such as below.
Support can include:
- Counselling and Emotional support
- mentoring-services
- life-coaching
- Someone to talk through your options with
- Help with confidence and motivation
- Support exploring education, training and employment
- Help connecting with other organisations and services
- Practical support attending appointments
- Support preparing for important conversations or appointments
Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.
That’s where we can help.
We can support you to identify what help might be right for you and, where appropriate, help make links with other organisations and services.
Our specialist life-coaching can also provide encouragement, practical guidance and support with attending appointments where appropriate. Having someone support you can make something that feels daunting feel much more manageable.
You Only Need to Take One Step at a Time
You don’t need to know exactly what your future looks like today.
Your next step might simply be:
Talk to someone.
Ask for help.
Make a phone call.
Explore your options.
Attend an appointment.
Take some time.
Every journey is different.
Support for Parents & Carers
Results Day can be an emotional time for parents and carers too.
You may feel proud, relieved, worried or unsure about how best to support your young person. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers.
Listen, reassure them and remind them that their results do not define their future.
If your young person is disappointed or unsure about what comes next, give them time and encourage them to talk about how they’re feeling. There is no need to have everything worked out on Results Day.
Support is available for parents and carers too.
Positive-Talk Counselling and Support Services can help parents and carers understand what support may be available, help make connections with appropriate organisations and services, and provide guidance around possible next steps.
Our mentoring-services & life-coaching can also provide practical support to young people, including helping them attend appointments where appropriate.
Remember
You are more than your GCSE results.
Finishing exams, it’s the end of a chapter that has shaped everyday life for over a decade.
It’s okay to feel excited.
