World Menopause Day 2026 Understanding, Support and Open Conversations
18th October 2026 World Menopause Day
Every year on 18th October, World Menopause Day raises awareness of menopause and the support options available to improve health and wellbeing. It is a chance to start honest conversations about a natural stage of life that many people still find difficult to talk about, at home, at work and with those closest to them.
At Positive-Talk Counselling and Support Services, we know that the menopause is not just a physical change. It can affect emotions, confidence, relationships, work and the way someone sees themselves. No one should feel they have to go through it alone.
What Is the Menopause?
Menopause is when periods stop for good, usually between the ages of 45 and 55. The years leading up to it are known as perimenopause, and symptoms can begin months or even years beforehand. Menopause can also happen earlier, naturally or as a result of medical treatment or surgery.
Everyone's experience is different. Some people notice very little, while for others the changes can feel overwhelming.
The Emotional Side of the Menopause
Hormonal changes can have a real impact on mental and emotional wellbeing. People going through perimenopause or menopause may experience:
- Anxiety and excessive worry
- Low mood or depression
- Mood swings and irritability
- Difficulty sleeping and night sweats
- Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
- Loss of confidence and self-esteem
- Feeling overwhelmed or out of control
- Changes in body image
- Hot flushes and physical discomfort
- Feeling isolated or misunderstood
- Changes in relationships and intimacy
These experiences are common and understandable.
It Affects More Than One Person
The menopause does not only affect the person going through it. Partners, families, friends and colleagues can all be affected too. Changes in mood, sleep and energy can put pressure on relationships, while many people also juggle work, caring responsibilities and family life at the same time.
Open, kind and honest communication can make a big difference, and support is available for everyone involved.
Menopause and the Workplace
Many people continue to work through the menopause, and some find that symptoms such as poor sleep, anxiety or difficulty concentrating affect how they feel at work. Feeling unable to talk about it can add to the stress.
Supportive, understanding workplaces make a real difference. Positive Talk also offers business support to help teams build a culture where wellbeing can be talked about openly and support managers to support staff going through menopause.
Why Talking Matters
Many people feel they should just "get on with it". However, emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical health. Talking to a qualified counsellor provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to explore how you are feeling, make sense of the changes you are going through and develop practical ways to cope. Talking therapies such as CBT are recognised in NHS guidance as a helpful option for low mood and anxiety linked to the menopause. Counselling is not a replacement for medical advice. If you think you may be experiencing menopause symptoms, it is a good idea to speak with your GP about the medical options available, alongside emotional support.
