World Humanitarian Day
The Power of Kindness, Compassion and Human Connection
19th August 2026 World Humanitarian Day honours the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to support people affected by conflict, disasters, poverty, and humanitarian crises around the world. It is also a reminder that compassion, empathy, and kindness have the power to change lives whether through large scale humanitarian efforts or acts of support within our own communities.
At Positive-Talk Counselling and Support Services , we believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. While humanitarian work often focuses on meeting physical needs, emotional and mental wellbeing are equally important. Healing begins when people know they are not facing life’s challenges alone.
Mental Health Is a Human Need
Difficult experiences can affect anyone at any stage of life. Whether someone is coping with personal loss, financial pressures, relationship difficulties, trauma, illness, or everyday stress, the emotional impact can be significant.
Many people experience:
- Anxiety and excessive worry
- Depression and persistent low mood
- Stress and emotional overwhelm
- Grief and bereavement
- Trauma and difficult life experiences
- Low confidence and self-esteem
- Loneliness and isolation
- Family or relationship challenges
- Burnout and emotional exhaustion
Mental health support is an important part of overall wellbeing. Seeking help is a positive step towards understanding emotions, building resilience, and finding healthier ways to cope.
The Importance of Human Connection
One of the greatest protective factors for mental wellbeing is meaningful human connection. Feeling listened to without judgement can reduce feelings of isolation and provide hope during difficult times.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another person is our time, compassion, and willingness to listen.
Acts of kindness can include:
- Checking in with a friend or family member
Small actions can have a lasting impact.

Our person-centred approach and Trauma based therapies focuses on understanding each individual’s unique experiences while helping them develop practical coping strategies and build emotional strength and more.
Looking After Those Who Care for Others
World Humanitarian Day also reminds us that those who spend their lives caring for others whether healthcare professionals, emergency responders, teachers, carers, charity workers, volunteers, or family members also need support.
Compassion fatigue and burnout are real experiences. Taking time to care for your own mental health is not selfish; it enables you to continue supporting others in a healthy and sustainable way.
Every Act of Kindness Matters
While humanitarian work often takes place on a global scale, we can all make a difference within our own communities. A kind conversation, a listening ear, or encouraging someone to seek support can have a meaningful impact on their wellbeing.
This World Humanitarian Day, let’s celebrate the people who dedicate their lives to helping others while remembering that compassion starts with everyday actions. By supporting one another, reducing the stigma around mental health, and encouraging open conversations, we can help build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.
If you or someone you know is struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, low confidence, or other emotional challenges, Positive-Talk Counselling and Support Services is here to help. Together, we can work towards improved wellbeing, greater resilience, and hope for the future.
