Black History Month: Honouring Our Communities, Celebrating Our Stories and Continuing the Conversation
Black History Month 2026
As October draws to a close, we come to the end of Black History Month in the UK. However, recognising Black history, celebrating Black communities and addressing inequality should never be limited to one month of the year.
Black History Month is an opportunity to recognise the contributions, achievements and experiences of Black people throughout British history and in modern society. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of representation, equality, identity and belonging.
The 2026 theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, encourages us to recognise people, relationships and shared experiences that help shape and strengthen communities.
At Positive Talk Counselling and Support Services, we know that every individual deserves to feel heard, respected and supported.
Why Black History Month Matters
Black history is an important part of Britain’s history. From contributions to culture, education, business and public services to the individuals who have challenged discrimination and helped create positive change, Black communities play an important role in shaping society.
Although October provides an opportunity to give these stories greater recognition, learning and celebrating should continue throughout the year.
Representation matters because seeing different backgrounds, experiences and identities acknowledged can help individuals feel valued and included. It also encourages conversations that challenge stereotypes, address misconceptions and promote greater understanding.
We can all contribute by listening to different perspectives, educating ourselves and recognising the importance of equality in our everyday interactions.
Understanding the Impact of Racism on Mental Health
Experiences of racism and discrimination can affect an individual’s emotional wellbeing. Being treated unfairly, excluded or judged because of their background can contribute to feelings of isolation, frustration, anxiety and reduced self-confidence.
For some individuals, these experiences may also affect their sense of identity, belonging and trust in others. It is important to recognise that everyone’s experiences are different and that people should not feel pressured to discuss or explain personal experiences unless they feel comfortable doing so.
At Positive Talk, we recognise the importance of having opportunities to talk openly and feel listened to. Our adult counselling services provide an opportunity for individuals to explore personal challenges and emotional difficulties in a supportive and understanding environment.
Our team of counsellors also includes professionals who are trained and experienced in supporting people through a range of difficulties, including racism, bullying, trauma, anxiety and challenges surrounding identity and self-esteem.
Creating Inclusive Conversations for Children and Young People
Children and young people can develop understanding and culture. Therefore, conversations about culture, identity, discrimination and equality can help encourage empathy, respect and understanding from an early age.
It is important that young people feel comfortable discussing their experiences and know that their concerns will be taken seriously. Parents, carers, teachers and other trusted adults can help by creating opportunities for open conversations and challenging discriminatory behaviour when it occurs.
Where additional emotional support is needed, Positive Talk offers children’s counselling and young people’s counselling. At Positive Talk counselling and support services can provide a space to explore feelings, build confidence and work through personal challenges.
Keeping the Conversation Going Beyond October
As Black History Month comes to an end, it is important that the conversations and learning do not.
There are many ways individuals, families, schools and workplaces can continue recognising Black history and promoting inclusion:
· Keep learning: Explore Black British history, achievements and contributions throughout the year.
· Listen to different experiences: Give people the opportunity to share their perspectives without making assumptions.
· Challenge discrimination: Speak up when you witness unfair treatment, stereotypes or discriminatory behaviour.
· Promote representation: Recognise the importance of diverse voices across education, employment, media and communities.
· Encourage open conversations: Create environments where people feel comfortable discussing identity, culture and experiences.
Small, consistent actions can contribute towards a more understanding and inclusive society.
