International Stress Awareness Week 2026: Understanding Stress and Finding the Right Support
International Stress Awareness Week 2026: Understanding Stress and Finding the Right Support
2–6 November 2026
Stress is something many people may experience at different points in their lives. Whether it is caused by work, education, relationships, family responsibilities or personal circumstances, it can sometimes feel difficult to manage.
International Stress Awareness Week provides an opportunity to recognise the impact stress can have and encourage people to take their wellbeing seriously and access support.
At Positive Talk Counselling and Support Services, we believe everyone deserves to feel heard, understood and supported. Recognising stress is an important first step towards finding healthier ways to manage it.
Understanding Stress
Stress can be the body’s natural response to pressure or challenging situations. In small amounts, it can sometimes help us respond to responsibilities and meet deadlines. However, when stress becomes frequent or continues for a long period, it can begin to affect everyday life.
Everyone experiences stress differently. Some people may notice changes in their mood, while others may experience difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, irritability or feeling overwhelmed.
Stress can also affect relationships, work, education and family life. For example, pressures at home may affect how family members communicate, while difficulties within relationships can contribute to ongoing emotional strain. If these challenges are affecting family life, Positive Talk’s family counselling services may be worth exploring.
What Can Cause Stress?
There is no single cause of stress. It can develop from a combination of circumstances, including:
· Work pressures: Heavy workloads, deadlines, workplace changes or uncertainty about employment.
· Education: Exams, coursework, expectations and balancing responsibilities.
· Family circumstances: Caring responsibilities, disagreements or changes at home.
· Relationships: Communication difficulties, separation or feeling unsupported.
· Financial pressures: Worrying about bills, employment or financial security.
· Major life changes: Moving home, bereavement or adjusting to unfamiliar situations.
Workplace stress may also affect both employees and employers. Positive Talk provides business support services for organisations interested in supporting wellbeing in the workplace.
Stress may also affect younger people. Education, friendships, expectations and changes at home can also contribute to pressure. Our children’s counselling services and young people’s counselling services recognise that younger individuals may need support with their own experiences and challenges.
Recognising When Stress Is Becoming Difficult to Manage
It can be easy to overlook stress, particularly when someone is used to putting other people’s needs before their own.
Some signs that stress may be affecting you include:
· Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried.
· Finding it difficult to relax or switch off.
· Becoming more irritable than usual.
· Experiencing changes in sleeping patterns.
· Struggling to concentrate or make decisions.
· Withdrawing from friends, family or activities.
· Feeling emotionally or mentally exhausted.
If you find it affecting your everyday life, it may be worth seeking appropriate support.
For adults experiencing personal or emotional challenges, adult counselling can provide an opportunity to talk through what is happening in a supportive setting.
Practical Ways to Manage Stress
Managing stress does not always require major changes. Small, realistic steps can help you create more space for your wellbeing.
Recognise what is causing pressure
Take some time to consider which situations are making you feel stressed. Identifying possible triggers can help you think about what might need to change.
How Positive Talk Can Support You
Sometimes, practical changes are helpful, but you may also need a supportive space to explore what is happening in your life.
At Positive Talk Counselling and Support Services, we provide counselling support for individuals, couples and families. You can learn more about who we are and our approach, as well as the people behind our work on our team page.
Stress may affect relationships, too. If communication difficulties or ongoing disagreements are contributing to pressure, our couples and relationship counselling services can be helpful.
You Do Not Have to Manage Everything Alone
International Stress Awareness Week is a reminder that looking after your wellbeing matters. Stress should not be ignored or treated as something you simply have to put up with.
Whether you are experiencing pressure at work, difficulties within relationships or challenges in your personal life, taking the time to recognise how you feel is important. Asking for support is a positive step, and you deserve to have your experiences taken seriously.
